Series Three Locations
Our first location needs no
introduction. The Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, the
very centre piece of the third series. Viewed here from the
Middlesbrough side, this photograph was taken soon after
filming finished.
If you look
carefully, you can see the outline of the ground where the
site office stood.
The Transporter
opened in 1911, and has operated regularly since. It is 851
feet in length and reached 160 feet above the River Tees.
The bridge still operates daily, and is the only Transporter
bridge in the country still providing regular service. The
cost of a trip across is 30p pedestrians, 40p for
motorcycles, 80p for cars, £1.50 for cars with
caravans/trailers, and anything larger (up to 3 tons)
£1.80. The bridge operates from Monday to Saturday 5.00am
to 23.05pm, and on Sundays from 14.00pm to 23.05pm. The
Transporter bridge visitor centre is located on the
Middlesbrough side.

Here we see the
Bridge approach from the Port Clarance side. Here we saw
Dennis and Neville wait for the Bridge gondola to arrive,
before Moxey made an impromptu appearance.

Looking over the
edge at the Port Clarance side, we see where Moxey cascaded
over on the motorbike he 'borrowed' from Lennie Cowan.
Naturally this
was done with a stunt man and crash mats, and as you can
see, it would be very difficult for a motorbike to end up in
the River.
Moxey was not
the first to make this mistake. During the early Seventies,
television comedian Terry Scott drove his car off the end,
believing it to be a regular bridge.

Here we have the
Middlesbrough approach to the Transporter bridge. Here we
saw the locals protesting at the deconstruction of their
bridge.
Also if you look
at the right leg of the bridge, the second gantry up was
where the scene of the lads and the binoculars was filmed,
although camera angling made this look as though it was a
lot higher up.

Here we have a
photograph of the travelling car of the bridge. In the
series, this was referred to as the 'Cradle', although the
correct name for it is the 'gondola'.
Here we saw
Grainger, Sarah, Tatiana and Barry make the final journey
across the river, as protested yelled and heckled.

Anyone visiting
the bridge may like to note that King's coach works are
located at the 'Boro side. Here we can see the buses that
were used in the show to ferry the Serbs and Kosos to and
from their digs and the site.

Here we have
another shot of the site. This is on the 'Boro side and is
the Odebrecht Oil and Gas compound. This is located on
Vulcan Street.
Here we saw many
scenes, including Joe's arrival, the football match, Oz and
Dennis' meeting with Yorgo, and of course the Serb/Kosovan
war replay.

Here we have
Vulcan street.
The scene of
Dennis driving Rampton at the end of episode one was filmed
down here. The steeple can quite clearly be seen in the
background.

Also on the
Middlesbrough side of the Bridge is the Captain Cook pub,
where the lads met for Oz's wake, and then made their local
during the job. The interior scenes were filmed elsewhere.
The series 3
scripts referred to the pub as 'The Anchor', although this
was never mentioned on screen and the Captain Cook name
could clearly be seen in several scenes.

Here is
Middlesbrough city centre. Here we saw the lads take a walk
together before deciding that they sounded like gaffers.

Here is the now
closed Miller's book shop in Middlesbrough.
Here we saw the
lads to stop and look in the window after they saw a display
heavily publicising Grainger's autobiography 'Starting
Over'.

Here we see the
drive way leading down to Oz's house.
Here we saw the
lads smuggle Moxey down in the boot, to avoid the risk of
anyone seeing him. This is located near to Whitbty.

Here we have
Oz's house. Oz moved here to get away from 'old haunts and
bad habits'.
We also saw
Moxey dig up Startup's money from where he burried it, in
Oz's garden.
As this is a
private address, I can only say that this house is in a town
close to Whitby.

Here we see the
Fox and Hounds public house in Danby, North Yorkshire.
He we saw Joe
taking lunch with Neville and Brenda before being
commandeered by the landlord for a photograph to go on the
bar next to Ian Botham.
I can highly
recommend the meals here. On the day we visited the food
and drink was absolutely excellent.

Here, again in
Danby, we have a rambling track, of the New Way road.
Here we saw
Neville and Brenda, taking a walk with Joe, who's appearance
turned the heads of other ramblers. It is not advisable to
visit this location during spells of bad weather.

Here thanks to
Mark Matthews, we have Pretoria Street in Newcastles West
End. Here we saw Dennis awaiting Tommy Rampton to conclude
his business. Photo (c) Mark Matthews

Mark, a view of Newcastle Central Station Taxi Rank, where
Dennis bought the paper with a headline about the bridge,
and also met Neville for a lift down to Oz's wake in
Middlesbrough.
