Educating Oz
(c) 1986 Tyne Tees Television

In the mid-late eighties, the world hit its peak in AIDS awareness.  A massive education campaign was launched by the government to make the public aware of this global killer.  Tyne Tees television adopted a novel approach to this.  They took two characters from TV's Auf Wiedersehen Pet and produced a one off 25 minute programme called 'Educating Oz'...

SYNOPSIS.

Dennis Patterson has to give a talk to 70 bricklayers, outlining to them the dangers of the AIDS virus. He attends a course, and afterwards goes to the local pub, to watch the course leader give a TV interview. Unfortunately, he finds a more than cynical Oz at the bar. Naturally Oz displays a bigotted attitude towards the whole thing, but Dennis decides that if he is to convince 70 brickies of the danger, he must make Oz aware also. After much fruitless debate, Dennis cannot get through. Perhaps a joint effort with the good Doctor himself can rid Oz of his ignorance.

A typical Friday night and Oz is propping up the bar.
DENNIS: I want to watch this TV show.  It's about AIDS

OZ: AIDS AIDS and yet more AIDS, I'm sick to death o' hearin' aboot AIDS

DENNIS: I've got to convince 70 bricklayers tomorrow that they've got to watch what they're doing!

OZ: Wey what for, you get nee shirtlifters on a building site man, the union would'nt allow it, the odd drug addict maybees!

DENNIS: Here's the doctors, he'll straighten you out!

OZ: I divvent want to be straightened out, I only came in for a pint man!

OZ: Hallo Doctor, sit down why dont you!
OZ: Well I understand how a man can give it to a woman, in the obvious way, I understand how a bloke could give it to another bloke in... well we're all men o' the world aren't we, not that I'd be up to anything like that mind!, its just that, well, I dont class meself as particularly thick in this repect...

DENNIS: Huh!

OZ: Argh thank you... I mean I can't understand how a woman can give it to a man, cos its, well, its one way traffic when you get in there is'nt it!

OZ: I think I'm ready for another drink
OZ: Two pints of lager and a pint of bitter, and er, some change for that machine in the bog.
