But in real life Gary hid a sordid secret. He was a heroin addict. And, according to his former lover Sue Harrison, his also indulged in violent, kinky sex. He even got her hooked on drugs, encouraging her to inject herself with heroin, she claimed. Garys craving for drugs was confirmed by his close friend Glenn Matlock, the former Sex Pistols guitarist. He said: "We both liked a drink, but Gary's major hang up was drugs. I'm very sad." Sue and Glen both told how Gary seemed to be heading for disaster because of his addiction.Sue, who lived with him for six years, and had a two year old son by him, said he was "stoned", whenever he appeared in front of the cameras during the filming of the first Pet series. His craving became so great, she added, that he could not perform in stage roles without a fix first. "He became a shambling wreck without a fix, and was turning up late for shows because he was out chasing dealers for more supplies," Sue is reported to have said. At one stage his agent became so worried about his addiction, that she kept him locked up in her country house in an effort to keep him away from pushers. Gary also sought treatment from doctors. RANDY Sue also claimed that when he was not high on drugs, he was often paralytic from booze. Gary also lived up to the randy image of his television character. His love life was certainly complicated. He admitted he shared his latest girlfriend with another man ...taking part in torrid three-in-a-bed sex sessions. All three - half Indian mistress Jahnet and her boyfriend Brian - shared a council flat. He even boasted how he got Sue to join them in a sex session. She explained how he tricked her into taking a drug called Ecstacy, which lowers inhibitions and shyness, so she would have sex with Brian. At the same time Holton slept with Jahnet. Holton also liked to strip off and then have sex with Jahnet in front of Sue. "The sight of them sickened me," she said. Sue also claimed that Holton frequently beat her during drunken rages. Twice he pulled lumps out of her hair. And on one occasion he began beating her up in a hotel bar in front of some of the Auf Wiedersehen Pet cast and production team. Yet when they first met she said that Holton was never kinky. She describes how the actor was highly sexed, sometimes making love to her four times a day. But even then he was on drugs. He was either smoking heroin or sniffing cocaine. And to give him an extra buzz he would pop a "speedball cocktail." This is a deadly combination of heroin and coke. Sue claimed that Gary's path to destruction became steeper after he became a television star. The big money and adulation went to his head - and tragically he couldn't cope. UNHAPPY And throughout it he had another secret. He was married all the time. He wed a girl called Donna six years ago. They split up two years later but never got divorced. She said: "Gary has always had a lot of women, even when he was with me. I think he is really unhappy, really screwed up." ===================================================================== SUB-ARTICLE, SAME PAGE. ===================================================================== Daily Mirror Saturday October 26th 1985. A further 13 episodes were planned, but a spokesman for Central Television said last night: "It is too early to say just how many are in the can. There is still a lot of work to be done on the series. We are all upset and depressed, it is a tremendous shock. We have only just got back from filming in Spain. Gary was his usual cheeky, chirpy self. The first we knew anything was wrong was when we had a telephone call this morning saying he would not make rehearsals in London. Later we learned that he was dead." Gary's manager and friend of 10 years, John Bee said: "It is an absolute tragedy. Everything was going well for Gary, with a new series and a panto lined up for Christmas. Now this - I can't believe it." Text (c) Mirror Group Newspapers 1985.
