Tyneside Locations

Hello and welcome to the Tyneside section of the location guide.  Newcastle upon Tyne was used for the filming of the Georide trio's homeland in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.  This was essential to encapture the feeling of the North East, with the Tyne Bridge, and high rise flats that are unmistakable to the area.  I think I have included them all here.  If you know of any more, then do please email me.

Without further ado, lets get on with the pictures.

Here we have Norma's house as it stands today. Here we saw Dennis and Christine interrupted in the street by Oz and Moxey wanting a cup of tea and a place to doss. The interior scenes of this location were filmed in Central TV's Nottingham studios. The same studio set had previously been used in the series, as Vera's house in series 1, and was re-decorated for the second season. As this is a private residence, we shall be maintaining the privacy of the owner and not giving it's exact location, and we are only willing to say that it is in the eastern part of Tyneside, in a residential area.

Here is Newcastle Central Station. On this photograph you can see the platform on which Barry arrived in Newcastle.

On this photograph you can see the bus-stop at the front of the station, where Barry asked two locals for directions. Newcastle Central station can be found on Neville Street in the southern part of the city centre.

Here is Newcastle's famous Bigg Market. Nowadays it is a collection of student bars and continental style cafes. In Auf Wiedersehen, Pet it set the scene for Dennis to pick Vicki up from the hair dressers. We can see on the photograph above the direction that Dennis drove her.

These days Vicki's hair dressers is a little less recognisable.

In this collection of photographs, we look at Dennis and Neville's chance meeting at a some traffic lights, Neville awestruck by the Jaguar, Dennis embarrassed that his friend may discover his new profession. The area is in the East end of Newcastle in an area called Manors. The Zebra crossing is on the west end of Byker Bridge, next to the Tanners Arms pub.

Here is a photograph of the approach, where we first see Neville driving. In the background is Byker Metro rail bridge.

Here is the billboard where we saw the Newcastle Brown Ale "WOOF!" poster (Newcastle Brown being locally nick-named 'Dog'.)

Here is the filming location for 'Marjorie doesn't live here anymore.', where Oz and Moxey arrive at Oz's flat. The street is Greencroft road in St. Anthonys, in the Walker district of Newcastle. In the photograph above we can see the gasometer, next to which Oz and Moxey were dropped off in a taxi.

Here is the building that served as Oz's flat, Merley Hall in Walker. The scene of Oz on the terrace outside the door of No.23, was filmed elsewhere.

This is Newcastle International Airport. The above photograph simulates the scene where Dennis drops off Ally & Vicki in 'Return of the seven' - part one.

The photograph on the left is the zebra-crossing and walk way that Ally paced up and down waiting for Dennis, before opting for a taxi in 'Return of the seven' - part two. Note the amount of change that has taken place.

This photograph shows where the magnificent seven waited to check in for their flight in 'Hasta la Vista.' It is interesting to note that most of the entrance area was re-tiled, yet a portion of the original tiles remained to form a pattern. The tiles that the lads stood waiting on are the ones that still remain.

The next selection of photographs were taken in the Dean Street area. This photograph shows where Dennis dropped off Oz and Moxey in Ally Fraser's Jag.

Here is Akenside Hill where they got out and went for a pint in the local Newcastle pub. Back then it was called 'The Newcastle Arms'. Now it has been very tastelessly painted blue and re-named 'Muse'. In between these times it was called 'The Pump House'.

Here is Dean street roundabout leading to the Quayside. Here we can see the bus-stop where Oz bids farewell to son Rod in 'Marjorie doesn't live here anymore.' As you can see, it has changed little.

These photographs show the Quayside in Newcastle. This location was used in the episode "Cowboys". It was here that when Dennis was out for a walk with his daughter Angela, they bumped in to Marjorie Osbourne, and she told him of how she wanted to divorce Oz.

Newcastle Quayside is currently being thoroughly redeveloped.
